Warning: Whinging Post!
So I'm house bound right now and not exercising. Missed Boxing with LBG this morning which was a shame. Considering I couldn't breathe through my nose, it was a wise choice to stay in bed. I did however get on the scales this morning and they flashed up 89.6kg. I had to get on and off them a few times to make sure I was seeing the right thing. The reason for my disbelief is that I've actually eaten a lot of crap over the last week or so - ever since I started PB'ing, I've given myself a lot of slack and have been eating less than ideal foods to 'compensate' for not being able to eat properly. Also, I'm not listening to whether I'm 'full' or not and am just eating anyway. That mindless eating thing again. I need to 'reset' my brain again so I'll give it some thought over the next couple of days as to what the plan of attack is..

Saturday Night In
Anyway, lap-band world and since the fill, I've discovered what a PB is and have had a total of 5 since Wednesday week ago. Two were from eating too quickly and not chewing enough, the other three were from sticky food or blockages. When I had my first PB, I didn't realise that it was a PB as I'd had two little steamed dim-sims and I'd made sure I'd taken my time with them. Within 10 minutes, I was in the bathroom. I don't know why, but for some reason I thought a PB would simply be a case of - oh, there's the pain, go to the bathroom, bring it up, all done. I didn't realise that the 'bring it up' bit could go on for an hour!!!!!! My Thursday morning PB was massive and to complicate things, I was at work with people coming in and out of the bathroom the whole time. Not good.
So what's caused the PBs? Here's the list:
- Leftover pasta with ricotta, pinenuts, spinach and prosciutto
- A fish taco
- Steamed dim sims; and worst of all..
- A bacon and egg wrap - two bites of that little bad boy and it resurfaced almost immediately.
Funnily enough, today I had a sausage sandwich with fresh white bread and I felt absolutely nothing, it went down a dream. Gah! It's the first bread I've had (besides a piece of toast yesterday) since mid-March but I'm not going to make it a habit if I can help it. After the PBs, I can see how easy it is to revert to soft food and also to drink with meals to get food down okay so these are the areas I'm going to need to work on in the coming weeks as I notice my drinking habis are still not good.
On the weight front, last week I was having a cracker! I weighed in at 89.4kg last Sunday at home but wouldn't you know it, two days later I was back around 91kg. I'm currently sitting around 90.8kg and as a bit of an experiment, I haven't tracked anything this week as far as points / calories is concerned. I know I've been eating too much and too many high calorie foods so I think from Monday, it's back on the tracking bandwagon for a while and get the weight-loss going. I have a goal to be 78kg by 26 September.
Last of all - exercise! This is going great guns and I've picked up to 4-5 sessions a week in a mix of weights training (x2) and cardio (x3). My dear friend LBG dragged my tired and sorry ass to a 6am Boxing class a couple of weeks ago and I enjoyed it so much that I did it again last week! Awesome and now I'm getting a touch more coordinated (I said a touch, not a lot!), I'll defintiely be keeping it up as long as I can. I'm also doing a couple of spin classes a week as well as a pump class. I've also started working with a personal training who is absolutely wonderful and she just canes me on the weights - my heart rate goes insane and I sweat as much as I do for hard core cardio. She's totally into developing my triceps (argh!) and my glutes (they're lazy apparently) so I feel like I've constantly got hot steel rods in my bum and arms. It's all good though and I really, really enjoy it.
Alrighty, enough from me. I'm off for a 10k hike in the morning and then lunch with a friend. Off to catch up on everyone's blogs and news... see you next week!

Back at the Clinic
24 Feb - initial consult
Wt: 103.8kg BF: 47% TL: 0kg
20 May - banded 2 months
Wt: 91.6kg BF: 41% TL: 12.2kg
I'm really, really, really happy with that. A little too happy apaprently cos I've been spending up big in the shops over the weekend and hubby gave me grief for the first time ever about my spending habits. Hmmmm.. anyway, I digress. Dr Tony was sick today so I had Dr George who was the assistant surgeon on my operation. I got peppered with questions not just about my hunger levels and what I'm eating etc but also on things like what controls hunger? Why do we not drink with meals? It was like a school exam! Onto the fill and I had another 0.75mL put in for a total of 6.25mL. This is definitely going to make a difference as to how much I can eat and also how fast / slow I need to eat and how full I am afterwards.
Next, the dietician - what a total waste of time this was! I was in a 'group' with an older guy who didn't want to be there and kept checking his phone as to when his wife was going to message him to pick him up and there was no interaction or group discussion like we've had in the past. We were run through a bunch of info that I've already forgotten and served up a handful of notes about 'common traps' that cause the band not to work effectively. we were flipped through a couple of case studies but seriously, we didn't get hardly anything to work with and it was quite frustrating. I'm hoping next session is better..
Finally, the psychologist - now this was fantastic. I went to a counsellor once before but didn't get a lot of out of it whereas today, there were a lot of real positives and I actually go to sort through some things and learned some strategies to help realign my thinking for success. The next step is to make it work by applying the strategies and letting go of past failures etc... and yes, easier said than done but let's see how we go! A bit of homework I got was to come up with a list of things that if I woke up tomorrow and was at goal weight, what would I do that I can't do now?
This was a tough one cos I actually asked myself that question a few years ago in a different context and ended up doing most of the things on the list like going back to do my masters at uni, resuming exercise, getting a new job etc. In any case, here's the start of my list and I'm going to add to it over time.
1. A healthy pregnancy (if and when it happens - not going to try for another 6 month at least or when i'm down to 75kgs!)
2. Buy a Country Road suit
3. Freedom in terms of not carrying the shame, guilt, painful awareness and stigmatism of being obese in a world that constantly judges to aesthetically high standards.
4. Complete a half-marathon

Monday Musings..
Yesterday, I popped into the city and cheered some friends on in the SMH half marathon. We were situated on the Hunter Street hill and it was pretty inspiring watchign the runners head up the hill and maintain their pace. So inspiring in fact that I've just signed up for the 9km Bridge Run in September. Now to start running...
After spending some time with our awesome friends who finished it in 2:30, I ended up going to the shopping centre near home and thought I'd have a look around.. and if I found anything I liked, I could make use of some of my vouchers. Oh my... well, I kind of went a bit nuts. I have a whole list of things I want to buy - everything from a Polar Heart Rate monitor to a George Foreman grill to a new Oroton or Mimco handbag to perfume to a slow cooker but instead, what did I spend my money on?
Clothes!
Yes, clothes. Clothes I'm only going to not fit in a couple of months time, clothes that I'd never normally buy but all the same, clothes! Gah!! Anyway, I'm now not allowed to complain about a lack of clothes seeing as I'm all kitted out for winter now. Well, nearly all kitted out. I need another pair of pants or trousers for work. The gorgeous Jane Lamerton pair I bought back in Feb now has the crutch hanging around mid-thigh for a very bad imitation of harem pants. they look terrible! *sigh* I'm contemplating either sending them to my sister or popping them on eBay..
I also forgot to mention my weightloss efforts for last week - well, I'm certainly eating a lot more now I've discovered I don't have any issues with food (yet) but 99% of the time, it's been good, healthy low-GI foods and balanced in terms of protein, cabs, fruit & veg etc. At WW this week, I stayed the same weight so I'll be looking for a loss this week. On Wednesday, I'm heading to the wonderful Dr Tony for a fill - I think I still need to get a bit more fill in there and get some restriction. I'm limiting myself to about 1.5 cup (including vegetables) each meal and I seem to be full for quite a while afterwards which is good. Every now and then though, I've had to exercise willpower to get me through situations where I could be eating crap food (e.g. chips etc). I just wish there were a crap food REJECT button which would automatically expel anything not on the 'approved' foods list. Already the band makes it easier to manage quantity but jeeze, willpower is another story.
On Wednesday, I'm also seeing the psychiatrist at the clinic which I think is going to be an interesting experience. In reading Michelle Bridges' book 'Crunch Time' there's one quote that stands out above all - this is not verbatim but it's basically the guts of it:
People don't have head issues because they're overweight. They're overweight because they have head issues.
Too true. It will be interesting to see what head issues I've got that I know of and to see if she can do anything about them. I have a feeling I'll be back to see her a few times..
Hope everyone out there in blogland is doing well. Looking forward to catching up on your blogs tnoight..

I Got...
.
.
.. a new pair of gorgeous Gucci glasses!
.
.
.
I'm totally on a mission right now. Bless our private healthcare - we get practically 100% back on most extras and each year we're with them, we receive a 'loyalty bonus' of several hundered dollars that can be used if we reach the limit for a service during the year. A few weeks back, we received notice that the limits are increasing for some services but as of 31 May, however all loyalty bonuses will be scrapped. ARGH! We had like $1200 racked up in loyalty bonuses!!!
So.. this is all very timely given the new band and the appointments with the physio, psychiatrist and dietician cos I've been claiming like mad and have been using loyalty bonus whenever I can. Thought that while I'm at it, I should get my eyes checked just in case and what do you know - I need a new prescription. Apart from getting new lenses in my Chanel's, I took the chance to get a second pair and fell in love with the Gucci's - must get a photo or some photo, any photo on here soon! What makes it even better was that two lots of lenses and a pair of frames was about $840 and my healthcare covered $613! Fan-bloody-tastic. I still adore my Chanel's though - they're a very different look, quite dark and geek-cool where as the Gucci's are light, posh and have diamontes on them. Yep, I'm all blinged up for work. *LOL*
Next stop with my health fund - WW and gym membership for the last two years. There's another $1200 back (2 years of WW and 2 years of gym for myself and husband) plus the remaining loyalty bonus of $350 cos of course it's more thatn $1200 that we've spent (which brings us down to $0 loyalty bonus by the end of May - yay!) and I'm looking at a nice little stimulus package of $1550 next week. Who needs Mr Rudd's stimulus when you forget to claim on your private health insurance?! Phew!
Pretty Witchery handbag here I come... (well, I need some kind of pay-off for all the 'accounting' that I've just done!!)

Budget Night Ponderings..
Back to my favourite topic though - FOOD. Yes, I didn't gain 1.1kg overnight for nothing folks. So, I wanted to share with you a recipe that I cooked tonight that's pretty damn easy and tastes jsut lovely. For the longest time, I've disliked ricotta but I've finally found a recipe that's got ricotta in it that I actually enjoy! This is a super quick and easy dinner - just love it.
Pasta with Pancetta, Spinach, Ricotta & Pinenuts
Pasta (I used fettucini today)
Knob of butter
100g or so of pancetta torn up
Small tub of ricotta
Bag of spinach
Handful of pinenuts
Nutmeg
Salt & Pepper
1. Cook up the pasta according to instructions on pack.
2. Just before the pasta is cooked, in a fry pan, pop the butter in and when foaming, throw in the pinenuts - stir a few times, then chuck in the spinach. Stir it round until spinach is wilted and the pine nuts are golden. Add a pinch of nutmeg and remove from heat.
3. Drain the pasta and return the pasta to the saucepan
4. Add the pinenuts, spinach and butter mix to the pasta
5. Pop the pancetta under a hot grill for a minute
6. Whilst pancetta is cooking, crumble ricotta into the pasta saucepan then add pancetta when it's turned crispy.
7. Add in salt & pepper then get your tongs and stir it up lots so the ricotta is crumbled up (no big chunks of it) and everything is thoroughly mixed through.
8. Put into heated pasta bowls and enjoy!
P.S. And thanks go to Wayne for the maternity leave scheme coming in during January 2011. Shame that it's after the next election but let's hope that the government stick to their promises.

What a Wonderful Mothers Day Weekend..
Yesterday was a cracker - at 10am we went down to Wollongong to see the family (mum, dad, aunt, uncle, nanna) but managed to fit in a 6km walk / run, WW meeting, trip to the shopping centre to pick up a b'day pressie and a shower all before then. One of my more productive mornings for sure! Anyway, it was a beautiful day and Nan was particularly excited because it meant we could go to her favourite place for lunch - a little place called 'Diggies' down by the beach. It's the first time I've seen Mum and Dad since end of Feb when I hit my peak weight and I'm down 12-13kg since then. Mum was so lovely and said all the right things - Dad however still can't come to grips with the surgery and didn't have much to say to me. He enjoyed the day but he is quite uncomfortable about it still and it's like the elephant in the corner that he doesn't want to talk about. Anyway, all went well food-wise and I had a little bit of the mezze plate for entree, a beef 'pie' for main (which I ate about half - wasn't that nice) and a couple of mouthfuls of carrot cake for dessert. All up I ate about a third of what I'd normally eat and enjoyed it probably more than I ever did!
We got home around 5.30pm and it was a quick costume change before heading out to a party and dropping Superman at his sports clubs annual dinner. The party was held in a fab hotel near to where I work (very handy!) and it was a bit of fun - the birthday girl looked fab and had a terrific time. As I hadn't eaten since lunch, I decided to give a couple of the hors d'oeuvres a go - the first one, a cruncy fried ravioli thing was fine but the second one - a mini beef burger proved a bit of a challenge. Halfway through, chest pain started and I started to sweat - dropped the rest of the mini burger and went into the bathroom. Waved my arms around for a bit, tried to 'hiccup' and did some 'chicken arms' and thank goodness, the pain stopped and crisis averted. I was FULLY ready to PB this time but seem to have dodged a bullet again on that one! Anyway, decided to leave the food for the rest of the evening and had a diet coke instead which I really enjoyed. Ended up getting home around 11pm and in bed not too long afterwards!
This morning (Sunday) was a wonderful day, the ever-lovely LBG suggested that I participate in the Mothers Day Classic at Parramatta this year so we signed up for the 8km walk and managed to drag along a few other friends for company. We had a great time! And I say that despite the 5.30am start and the additional 3.5km I walked outside of the 8kms. *LOL* We got to do two laps of the park and it was just so gorgeous out walking in the weather and with all the people dressed in pink. LBG and my friend RR were walking with me and they set a cracking pace - LBG was brave enough to run and probably would have run more had I not been a piker and pulled the plug on it. Oooops! For some reason, I seem to get a stitch on my right side when I run or walk fast in the mornings. Happened yesterday too and it used to be quite chronic when I was training to run 5kms a couple of years ago. I don't get them at night though... hmmmm. Anyway, when we finished the walk, we were given some of the lovely goodies they were handing out so I'm looking forward to spending my $10 Jaqui E voucher and drinking water out of my nifty little Tupperware drink bottle. Too cute! Most of all though, the day was a fantastic day to pay tribute to those people whose lives have been touched by cancer (in particular breast cancer) and to raise money for research. All together quite an amazing event!
Okay better go.. gotta pack the gym gear for work tomorrow and catch some z's. Am knackered now. Hope everyone had a fantastic day... xo
